LGBTQ Postcard Project: Snippets from our Past

Today’s postcard:

From: Male
Year: 1986
Location: Michigan

AIDS was not an issue as far as I knew in 1986 in my corner of Michigan. What little I knew from newspapers led everyone to think it was a big coastal city thing, not a small-town Midwest issue. It was not something I wanted to learn about but we don’t always choose our topics we need to learn.

LGBTQ Postcard Project: Snippets from our Past

Today’s postcard:

From: Female
Year: 1956
Location: Massachusetts

My junior high English teacher suggested I read Well of Loneliness. For a book report. The school library didn’t have it so I went to the local public library. The librarian asked why I wanted it. I told her I needed it for a book report. She ordered it. It came wrapped in a brown paper bag. I took it home and started to read. All my little junior high school mind could think was “Oh shit!”
